Job Description:
To initiate and coordinate financial assistance for patients with their insurance carrier, to provide financial counseling to patients, and to work closely with providers, billing department, and pharmaceutical companies. Financial Counselors work to ensure grants and financial assistance are available to patients.- Outline treatment costs and patient responsibility to patients or parties responsible for payment.
- Counsel patients regarding insurance benefits and recommend alternative sources of payment and financial assistance when appropriate.

- Identify financial assistance programs for patients unable to meet their financial obligations.
- Maintain accurate documentation of grants, financial assistance paperwork, and payment arrangements into patient charts.
- Assist patients on hardship application processes.
- Complete foundation applications and submit all required grant information for patients.
- Communicate with pharmaceutical companies and other resources in obtaining grants and financial assistance for patients.
- Communicate with billing department regarding patient statements with grants
- Monitor and track renewals of grants for patients.
- Review provider and chemotherapy schedules, checking patients’ accounts for outstanding claims over 60 days and request additional claim follow up.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least one year of related experience and/or training, including customer service experience
- Attention to detail
- Ability to multi-task and navigate between multiple systems simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
- Spanish speaking preferred
- Previous experience as a financial counselor
- Basic understanding of medical terminology
- Previous experience in medical insurance preferred
- Understanding of State and Federal assistance
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; able to adjust to variable audiences and levels of education; strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated caring compassionate attitude toward others; cooperative and approachable demeanor; readily acts as a role model and staff resource
- Demonstrated self-motivation; able to work both independently and collaboratively
- Strong problem-solving, organization/time management and prioritization skills
- Demonstrated professionalism; remains composed under stress; follows through on commitments
- Computer proficiency to include: EMR, Microsoft Office and Web-Based Applications
